Blackjack History

If we trace the origin of Blackjack, it dates back to the 1700s. It’s supposed to originate in France and was known as Vingt-et-Un during its early days. In the French language, it means 21. This is why the other name of Blackjack is 21. This card game got its first written reference in a Spanish story, named Rinconetey Cortadillo. The short story was penned by Miguel de Cervantes and it was published in 1613. The author himself was a pro gambler and the story was also about two card cheaters.

According to historical records, Blackjack was first played in France around the 18th century. The game gained huge popularity when Royal Court members started playing this game regularly. One major event in Blackjack history was its introduction to North Americans. During the French Colonial Era of the 18th century, the game became a hit and a gambling hall in New Orleans legalized Blackjack in the 1820s.

Eleanor Dumont, a French woman, also played a great role in boosting the popularity of Blackjack in America when she opened a gambling parlour in Nevada City. Another major event in the Blackjack Evolution that’s worth mentioning here is World War I. During this event, many land-based casinos started offering lucrative bonuses for those playing Blackjack and winning a round by building a hand using Ace of Spades and Jack of Clubs.

Blackjack Evolution

Blackjack evolution is a long event and includes many incidences. One major Blackjack Evolution is the introduction of the card counting technique by Edward Thorp in 1950. By closely observing the game of Blackjack, he learned that players can have an upper hand over their peers by tracking which cards are tracked and which are pending in the deck. This was the first ever Blackjack strategy we had to improve our winning odds.

The launch of online casinos also has a great role in shaping the Blackjack evolution. As online casinos started growing, we got to see the online version of Blackjack. This was a great Blackjack evolution because players don’t have to visit any land-based casino to enjoy this game.

Blackjack Strategies

The first ever attempt to form a Blackjack strategy was done by Roger Baldwin, Wilbert Cantey, Herbert Maisel and James McDermid in 1956. They published a paper The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack and listed mathematically-based Blackjack strategy.

After the development of the Card Counting Blackjack strategy, we get to see many more strategies showing up to boost your winning probabilities. Here is a quick rundown of Blackjack strategies we use today.

  • Doubling Down on Hard 11: According to this strategy, players should double their bets when their hand total is 11, no matter what the dealer’s hand is. This strategy is based on the fact that having a hand with a total of 11 has a high winning possibility. So, players can double their bet to bag a big win.
  • Splitting Aces and 8s: Blackjack players are recommended not to have a pair of aces and 8s in one hand to increase the winning possibilities. This strategy is based on the fact that one hand featuring aces and 8s is weaker. So, players should avoid having them together in one hand.
  • Insurance Strategy- If you follow the insurance strategy then you need to make sure that if the dealer hand has an ace or upcard then players need to take insurance to protect their bet.
  • Hit with 12-16 hand: This strategy involves hitting when your hand value is between 12-16 against a strong upcard. This strategy helps you have a better winning probability over a strong dealer hand.
  • Surrender Strategy: This strategy advises surrendering certain hands when the dealer has a strong upcard. It is based on the fact that surrendering a hand reduces the player’s losses and increases their chances of winning in the long run.
